Cooper&Hunter Shares What Homeowners Should Know Before Buying a Mini Split System
HVAC manufacturers encourage consumers to look beyond price and consider efficiency, installation quality, and long-term performance when selecting a heating and cooling system.

As more homeowners explore energy-efficient heating and cooling options, Cooper&Hunter is encouraging consumers to take a thoughtful approach when comparing mini split systems. While price often plays a role in purchasing decisions, Cooper&Hunter says long-term comfort and satisfaction depend on evaluating several important factors before making an investment.

Mini split systems have become increasingly popular because they offer flexible installation, zoned comfort, and high energy efficiency without requiring traditional ductwork. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, duct losses can account for more than 30 percent of energy consumption for space conditioning in some homes, making ductless systems an attractive option for many homeowners.

“One of the first questions people ask is, ‘Which system is the best?'” said Cooper&Hunter’s Marketing Director, Jake Neto. “A better question is, ‘Which system is the best for my home?’ The answer depends on factors like your home’s size, climate, layout, and how you use each room every day.”

Cooper&Hunter recommends that homeowners begin by understanding the importance of proper system sizing. Equipment that is too large may cycle on and off frequently, while undersized equipment may struggle to maintain comfortable temperatures during periods of high demand.

“A family once told us they assumed buying the largest unit available would solve every comfort problem,” an HVAC Contractor stated. “After evaluating the home, it became clear that a properly sized multi-zone system was actually the better solution. They ended up with more consistent temperatures, lower energy use, and better comfort throughout the house.”

Energy efficiency should also play a central role in the decision-making process. Heating and cooling account for roughly half of the average household’s annual energy use, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, making equipment efficiency an important consideration over the life of the system.

Cooper&Hunter encourages buyers to compare efficiency ratings such as SEER2 for cooling and HSPF2 for heating, while also considering how those ratings align with their local climate and expected usage.

“Many homeowners focus entirely on the purchase price,” the HVAC Contractor said. “We encourage people to think about operating costs over the next 10 or 15 years. A more efficient system often continues providing value long after installation day.”

Installation quality is another factor that can significantly influence long-term performance.

Even the most advanced HVAC equipment depends on proper refrigerant charging, airflow, electrical connections, drainage, and equipment placement. These details directly affect efficiency, reliability, and equipment lifespan.

“We’ve seen situations where homeowners believed the equipment itself wasn’t performing well,” said the HVAC Contractor. “After a closer inspection, the issue turned out to be an installation problem that could be corrected. Once everything was set up properly, the system performed exactly as expected.”

The company also encourages homeowners to think about how they want to use their living spaces. Multi-zone systems allow different rooms to maintain independent temperatures, making them well-suited for growing families, home offices, additions, and rooms with unique heating or cooling needs.

Technology has also become an important consideration. Many modern mini split systems include inverter compressors that adjust output continuously rather than switching fully on and off. This helps maintain more consistent temperatures while improving energy efficiency and reducing operating noise.

“One homeowner told us the first thing they noticed wasn’t the temperature. It was how quiet the system was,” the Contractor said. “Sometimes the best compliment is that you forget the equipment is even running because your home simply feels comfortable.”

Cooper&Hunter recommends that homeowners ask several questions before purchasing a system:

  • Is the equipment properly sized for my home?

  • How efficient is the system for both heating and cooling?

  • Will it provide enough capacity during extreme weather?

  • Is professional installation included?

  • What warranty coverage is available?

  • How easy will routine maintenance be over the life of the system?

Answering these questions early helps buyers compare systems based on long-term value rather than short-term cost alone.

As interest in energy-efficient HVAC technology continues to grow, Cooper&Hunter believes consumer education is becoming just as important as product innovation.

“The best purchasing decisions happen when homeowners understand what they’re comparing,” the Contractor said. “Looking beyond marketing claims and focusing on performance, installation, efficiency, and long-term reliability gives people the confidence to choose a system that fits their home and their lifestyle.”
