U.S. Moon Landing Dollar available at San Francisco Chinatown Moon Festival
On July 20, 1969, United States astronaut, Neil Armstrong, was the first to step onto the moon, proclaiming for the ages, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” The nation celebrated the 50th anniversary of Apollo II’s “giant leap” with many forms of activities. The United States Mint issued commemorative coins, and in Armstrong’s hometown of Wapakoneta, Ohio, nearly 2,000 runners competed in “Run to the Moon” races. Hundreds of visitors gathered on the grounds of the Armstrong Air and Space Museum in Ohio to view scale models of the NASA’s Space Launch System. The United States Vice President, Mike Pence, at Kennedy Space Center paid tribute to astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and command module pilot, Michael Collins, as well as the 400,000 Americans who worked tirelessly to get them to the moon, with the proclamation that if they’re not heroes, “then there are no heroes.”
Coin collector and restaurant owner, Jimmy Quan, from San Francisco Chinatown is using this opportunity to celebrate the Moon Landing Event and the traditional Chinese Moon Festival by giving out a moon landing dollar to his customers, (see attachment). He explained that, “The Eisenhower dollars issued in 1971 to 1978 are a perfect gift to my customers.” The front of the coins depicts President Dwight D. Eisenhower, and the back displays the Apollo II Mission insignia. Because the size of the dollars was big and bulky, it was unpopular during that time and slowly disappeared from circulation. Though this dollar can be used, the American younger generation and tourists to the United States will likely never see one in the open market, as it is extremely difficult to obtain in daily transactions. Mr. Quan also stated that by giving away this collectible dollars, he aims to celebrates the great achievement of our historical event , but also promote numismatics (a fancy term for coin collecting). This field of study used to be a very popular hobby among Americans, but has been slowly losing traction as younger generations become more occupied with other attractions such as social media, video games, internet etc.
Chinese Moon Festival is the oldest event celebrated annually in Chinatown for over 50 years, it attracted thousands of visitors to the Chinatown street fair, this year street fair will be held on September 7 & 8, by using this opportunity to promote the Moon Landing Event and the Chinese Moon Festival will enrich the visitors and local people their knowledge of our great American history and Chinese heritage.( For further information please call Chinatown Visitor Center 1-415-395-9060, 625 Kearny St., San Francisco, CA 94108, [email protected])
